Hip-hop legend and NYC street ball enthusiast, Bobbito Garcia (of Stretch & Bobbito fame) teamed up with Kevin Couliau to make a documentary film on the history, culture, and social impact of New York’s summer b-ball scene, often recognized as the “Mecca” of the sport.

Doin It In The Park, a 60 minute documentary filmed entirely on a Canon 5D Mark II and a Canon 1D Mark IV.

There are over 700+ b-ball courts in New York City and an estimated half a million players that play on the frequent in the streets of NYC. Bobbito and Kevin visited over 180 of those 700+ courts to film for Doin’ It In The Park.

Main film characters: Julius “Dr. J” Erving, Kenny Smith, “Pee Wee” Kirkland, “Fly” Williams, God Shammgod, Tim “Headache” Gittens, Corey “Homicide” Williams, Kenny Anderson, Jack Ryan, Richard “Crazy Legs” Colon, Niki Avery, Milani Malik, and the Park Pick-Up Players of NYC.

The film has gotten various screenings and premieres across the country, but it has also recently offered the film for sale online for a simple and high quality download, which you can purchase here.

In his 2009 film District 9, director Neill Blomkamp created a movie that felt more like a documentary on immigration than a science-fiction laser-fest.

Then it promptly turned into a science-fiction laser-fest.  Like we all wanted.

Blomkamp is making a name for himself in being able to create a relatable, realistic experience within a futuristic setting.  Where District 9 spoke to current events in human aid and immigration, his new movie, Elysium, touches on income disparity and the 99% vs. 1%.  Within this universe, we can expect a tense, action-packed movie with a whole lot of passion behind the boom.

Admittedly, the final season of HBO’s Entourage left me and many others unfulfilled.  Not only was it limited to eight episodes, but they were very anti-everything we’ve liked about the show.  Nevermind all that though, because its a new day!  Executive producer Mark Wahlberg revealed that the movie has finally been greenlit by Warner Bros. and series creator Doug Ellin has finished the script.  If all goes well, the movie will begin production this year and will be released in Summer or Fall of 2014.

Our guy Common is in a new independent flick called “LUV.” It’s about an 11-year-old boy who gets a crash course in what it means to be a man when he spends a day with the ex-convict uncle he idolizes. (C/o IMDB).

For the last few months, director Robert Townsend  has been in Miami filming his upcoming basketball-inspired romantic comedy, Playin’ for Love. Robert has been working hand in hand with the City Of Miami and the Miami Heat to ensure filming is not only a smooth process, but a beneficial process for local kids and crew, of whom they are using many students from the University Of Miami.

Robert has been involving the community and working with a lot of local youths from the Overtown community, including young people that are aspiring to have careers in the film and entertainment industry. The crew even held a casting alongside Isiah Thomas at the American Airlines Arena looking for extras and players to star in the movie.

The movie will highlight the historic Overtown district as a whole, as well local high schools Booker T. Washington, Miami Jackson and Miami Edison and Miami High. Of the film [Playin’ for Love], Townsend says tells the UM’s School Of Communication:

“When Commissioner Jones approached me about creating a project here in Miami to give the local community and beyond a message of hope, I signed on immediately. This is a situation I understand, I was that kid from the ghetto.  I know what we can do by reaching out to young people in Miami and showing them possibilities.  They too can touch the dream and we are all joining together to help that come true.”

The movie is set to hit theaters in 2014, so more details should arrive later this year in regards to an actual premiere date.

Meel: I think since kids we have all been brainwashed to watch and like A Christmas Story so I’m picking Home Alone. It’s full of classic parts and lines – “Keep the change you filthy animal.” Put Ralphie in Kevin’s situation and the Wet Bandits would have had him tied up in a basement or something. I would have loved to been home alone at that age. Kevin handled himself like a grown man. Who was the cooler character Kevin or Ralphie? By the way, Home Alone 2 was a classic as well.

Lowkey: A Christmas Story represents every little boy and every little girl in America who did whatever they could to get that ONE toy they could for Christmas. Whether it was staying out of trouble in school or praying to the jolly fat man on that red flying sleigh, we were all Ralphie at one point in time. This tale is timeless and will be passed down from generation to generation forever.

James Band: Skyfall, was the biggest movie in the U.S. last week pulling in over $80 Million. Numbers-wise, that makes it the most successful Bond film ever. Not only that, but prior to opening last Friday, the movie earned $346 million in theaters overseas where it released before releasing in the U.S.

We have a feeling that the film was successful, not only for its obvious reputation of expectations set by the Bond franchise (this being the 23rd film in it). But you might say that the film was also a success with the help of new Bond girl, the French born, Berenice Marlohe.

Bérénice Marlohe is an actress of Cambodian, Chinese, and French descent. She’s done various photoshoots for FHM, Maxim and more. Below, you can see a few photos of her beauty behind the camera and on a couple red carpets.
