I just realized that I left off media! Sorry, there’s actually five ways to really work in the sports industry. ESPN is obviously the biggest player in sports media, but when it comes to paying billions for broadcast rights to the leagues everyone is a player (think: NBC, CBS, and DirectTV). If you guys & girls want two cents on media, let me know and I’ll throw something together.

Part 1 – Working with a major brand
Part 2 – Working with a sports league or team

the agency

PRO’S: There’s not many jobs sexier than working at one of the big talent representation firms (think: CAA, Wasserman, Excel). We’ve all seen Entourage, right? Well, it’s not exactly like Entourage but it’s pretty damn cool. Imagine running around the country to sign up the world’s best athletes, sitting courtside at playoff games, and closing multimillion dollar deals for your clients. It doesn’t get any better than that!

CON’S: Agents are generally considered at the bottom of the sports food chain unless they’re one of the big dogs. For every Arn Tellem and Tom Condon, there’s a ton of other guys barely making it and chasing the scraps at the bottom of the draft. Like most other sports careers, agents work long hours and travel often.

If you watched the NBA Draft Lottery last night you know the Cleveland Cavaliers ended up with the #1 overall pick – giving them two of the top picks in the past three years. The Cavs have drafted well and have some very good young players including Kyrie Irving, Tristan Thompson, Dion Waiters and Tyler Zeller.

The Cavs are in bad need of a small forward or a wing type of player. They have a total of four picks. My question to you is what do you do with the overall #1 draft pick this year if you’re the Cavs GM?

Check out this 12 year old kid by the name of Damon Harge. Youngin is already playing varsity ball and giving dudes buckets. Remember the name Damon Harge because in the year 2018 he will be a top recruit or possibly a lottery pick if they change the NBA Draft rules back.

Welcome to Two! As a part of this four-part series, we won’t be covering college sports, but you can definitely apply a lot of what you’ll find below into working at your local college or university athletics department.

The League

PRO’S: If you’ve always wanted to work in sports, then working at a league (think: MLB, NFL, NBA, NHL) might be the place for you. League and team staff have the best access and resources at their disposal. Where else can you get in close and see the action? It’s important to understand that sports is a serious business. It’s definitely not all watching games and hanging out. If sports is where your heart is at, then it doesn’t get any better than working at a league.

CON’S: The league just like brands tends to be rather political and dominated by seniority so it can be hard to move up once you’re in. You’ve got to really love sports because the league can be a grind on most people. Expect to work long hours! Positions in media and marketing can be extremely low paying.

What does it take to become a superstar? What does it take to be great? Have you ever asked yourself those questions? Of course not everyone will play professional basketball, but we all have the capacity to be the best.

Check out this never before seen video of LeBron & Chris Paul schooling a young James Harden and Stephen Curry.

So you want to work in sports, huh? If I’ve done my math right there are pretty much only four ways into the sports industry. Each is different with it’s own pros and cons. I’ll break down each over the next couple of days.

The Brand

PRO’S: The big brands (think: Nike, Adidas, Coca-Cola, Pepsi) wield all of the power mainly through their ability to write big checks for marketing and advertising. These are the guys and girls that usually get want they want in the world of sports. They are only limited by their budgets.

CON’S: There’s not much down side to working with a brand unless you’re at a smaller company with less resources at your disposal. Brands are a bit like the army, in order to be successful you have to keep your head down and do what you’re told. If you’re super independent with an entrepreneurial mindset than working at a brand may be difficult for you.
