Founded in 2004, the LeBron James Family Foundation commits its time, resources, and efforts to the kids and families in Akron who need it most. Focusing on education as the fundamental key to generational change, the Foundation serves more than 1,400 at-risk students and their families with interventions, incentives, and complete wraparound supports to help them create a better future. In 2018, all of the Foundation’s programming culminated in the opening of the I PROMISE School, a groundbreaking Akron Public School rooted in the Foundation’s “We Are Family” philosophy that is creating a model for urban, public education.
A kid from Akron has inspired kids and people from around the world with his relentless commitment to pushing for more, to striving for greatness. Central to that pursuit is his commitment to the youth coming after him in his hometown of Akron and across the globe – made visible by the I PROMISE bands they wear on the wrist daily. LeBron establishes the I PROMISE Institute on the University of Akron campus as an around-the-clock resource center for his I PROMISE students, acclimating them to life on a college campus.
The Ohio Board of Education formally approves the designs and creation of the I PROMISE School in Akron. Educators, civic leaders, academic experts, community members, parents and students immediately get to work on the creation of the curriculum, innovative school year, and wrap-around supports IPS will provide.
On July 30, 2018 the I PROMISE School opened its doors for an historic first day of school for its inaugural class of 240 I PROMISE students.
Now the kid from Akron is rolling all of his efforts in to the I PROMISE School in order to change the lives of kids and families across Akron and create a model of urban public education for the rest of the world to follow.
LeBron announces the I PROMISE Village by Graduate Hotels for students and their families who need a safe, comforting place to stay as they work through challenges they may be facing including homelessness, domestic violence, and other unforeseen circumstances.

LeBron has proudly represented USA in the Olympics three times, helping Team USA earn medals in each campaign. In the 2004 Olympics, he helped the team win a bronze medal in Athens.
